I suppose it is every designers dream for their work to become globally iconic and debated. This is usually determined by the response of other designers to that work. Fairey's 2008 Obama Hope image has become to well-known that rip-offs and parodies are a dime a dozen. They have become so many, even Fairey himself has welcomed and appreciated them.
To no surprise, even US high school American football teams have taken it up to slap it on a few t-shirts. I do however think that the true designers out there are a little tired of the cheap repetition.
Bellevue Wolverines wear their victory t-shirts depicting their coach, Butch Goncharoff after the team won their 23-17 State Title victory over Liberty at the Tacoma Dome, Friday, December 3, 2009.
The infamous Shepard Fairey image of President Barack Obama that became an iconic part of his 2008 election campaign.
Another copycat image of the Obama poster by Fairey himself for Adopt-A-Pet.com's ADOPT campaign.
The Awesome Optimus Prime in a Transformers parody, Change Into A Truck by Tim Doyle
David Friedman uses the Jedi legend Luke Skywalker for his 'A New Hope' version.
This image made its way onto the cover of the famous MAD Magazine.
HOPE? Bob Hope!
There is a huge bunch these Fairey rip-offs here.
There are even now online tutorials to do the effect yourself, if you are so inspired, at Vector Tuts Plus. Probably a bad idea to put it on a t-shirt.
